11 November 2004 - 16:55Climbing Mt. Osceola

With no class because of Veteran’s day, aelscha and I took the opportunity to climb Mt. Osceola. We weren’t exactly sure what to expect in terms of weather, and we both underestimated the amount of snow considerably. Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun and we even met several interesting folks while on the summit (which definitely surprised me, its pretty late in the season). We took some pictures, including some of a snowman we found on the summit when we emerged. The ski area/town area you can see is Waterville Valley. Hope you enjoy the photos! Though I wish we’d had crampons for some of the slippery sections, the hike was satisfying and challenging, but not too difficult.

In other news, on the Summit I was able to make a simplex contact on the 2 meter band with WS1D over 50 miles away, using only 5 watts and my über-flexible Pryme RD-98 2M/70CM antenna. I think I was also able to hit the K1OX repeater in Chester, NH (probably close to 100 miles away) on 5 watts, but I did not receive a reply so perhaps my transmission was not adequately clear.

  1. Although I can’t imagine climbing a mountain in snow without getting frostbite, I’m glad you had a good time climbing Mt. Osceola. We, however, here in SC, don’t get Veteran’s Day off, probably because the people on the board of Charleston County don’t know what a veteran is. Just Kidding!
